Kitten Acclimation
At Bonbelle British Shorthairs, we understand that introducing a new kitten to your home and other pets can be a slow process that requires patience. In this section we offer support and guidance on how to make this process as easy and stress-free as possible. If you have any questions about acclimating your new kitten, please don't hesitate to contact us for advice.

Week by Week
"This is a lot to take in!"
Week 1
-
Set up a cozy, quiet space for your kitten with a bed, litter box, food, and water. This should be in a quiet part of the house away from people and pets. Shop ahead of time to have everything settled by the time your kitten comes home. Our supply suggestions are linked here.
-
Spend time nearby without overwhelming them, allowing them to explore at their own pace.
-
Introduce them to family members gradually and gently.
-
Begin a regular feeding schedule and establish a routine.
"I kinda like it here..."
Week 2
-
Encourage playtime with interactive toys to build trust and confidence.
-
Continue socialization with gentle handling and positive reinforcement.
-
Start introducing other pets. By now they have been able to smell one another, but starting on week 2 you can start moving forward with the introduction. Try showing the kitten to other pets through a gate or by putting the kitten in a familiar and enclosed carrier (like the one they came home in).
-
Start introducing scratching posts and teaching them appropriate scratching behavior.
"I have the best family!"
Week 3 and onward
-
Expand their territory gradually, allowing supervised exploration of other areas of the home.
-
Continue socialization with other pets if applicable.
-
Schedule a veterinary check-up if not done already, and discuss vaccination and deworming schedules. This helps to establish a relationship in case your kitten has an accident or illness before they need another wellness exam.
-
Establish grooming routines, such as brushing their dense fur and trimming their nails.
-
Keep providing mental stimulation through toys, puzzles, and interactive games.
-
Remember, patience and consistency are key to helping your kitten feel safe and secure in their new environment.
