A Bit of History

British Shorthairs have been a beloved breed for centuries. Their story begins with cats brought to Britain by Roman invaders. Over time, these cats evolved into the breed we know today. Their sturdy, robust build and calm demeanor have always made them cherished companions.

What Makes Them Stand Out

British Shorthairs are hard to miss with their round faces and large, expressive eyes. They have a muscular, compact body and a coat that’s dense and plush. They come in a range of colors—from the classic blue (gray) to more unusual shades like chocolate and lilac (which we love!). Their soft, thick coat is not only gorgeous but also a joy to pet.

Their Personality

One of the things I love most about British Shorthairs is their laid-back, affectionate nature. They’re typically calm and gentle, making them great companions for families, singles, and even other pets. They enjoy spending time with their humans but are also quite content to entertain themselves when you’re away, which is perfect if you have a busy schedule.

Despite their relaxed attitude, British Shorthairs are playful and love interactive toys. They have a knack for bringing a smile to your face with their charming antics.

Grooming and Care

Taking care of a British Shorthair is relatively easy. Their short, dense coat doesn’t mat easily, so a regular brush to remove loose hairs and occasional baths are usually enough. They might need a bit of help with tear staining, which can be easily managed with a damp cloth.

Regular vet check-ups are essential to keep them healthy. Like all breeds, they can be prone to certain health issues, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Finding a reputable breeder who conducts thorough health testing is crucial to ensuring your kitten’s well-being. At Bonbelle we regularly scan via echocardiogram for HCM. HCM cannot be genetically tested for through cheek swab yet in British Shorthairs.

Why They’re So Special

Choosing a British Shorthair means welcoming a cat with a perfect mix of beauty, charm, and personality. Their calm and loving nature makes them wonderful companions, whether you’re a family with kids, a busy professional, or anyone in between. Their elegant appearance and playful spirit add a special touch to any home.

If you’re thinking about bringing a British Shorthair into your life, they're a great breed. They’re not just cats—they’re warm, affectionate teddy bears who will quickly become a cherished part of your family.

Thanks for joining me in exploring the wonderful world of British Shorthairs. I hope you’ve enjoyed this peek into why these cats are so lovable.
